Ghost Nets 1

Soft ground etching, embossed found objects

28x38cm, Somerset paper, 2023

For this work, I impressed scavenged netting onto a soft wax ground on a zinc plate. I then painted the negative spaces with stop out varnish before dunking the plate in nitric acid for around 10 minutes. The etched plate was then inked up and overlaid on the press bed with two additional pieces of netting, one inked in nasturtium orange, the other half inked in black and half left uninked.

During printing, the overlaid netting was embossed on the soaked paper.

Ghost Nets III

The embossed nets in Ghost Nets 3 were overlaid on a zinc plate that was coated three times with soft wax ground and had three dips in nitric acid, the first at 5 minutes, the second at 8 minutes, the third at 12 minutes, creating the three layers of darkness. Some of the 10x10cm prints feature watercolour.
